Walking is one of the most basic forms of exercise available to those who enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Not only is it a great way to keep in shape, it enables you to see more of your surroundings- everything your city has to offer. Here in Montreal, walking is also a great way to get around. Instead of waiting for the metro or the bus or spending hours in traffic, walk to work or school to get an energy boost and avoid long waiting periods and aggravating situations, such as a grid lock during rush hour.

Walking has many benefits and has been linked to cancer prevention, a lower risk of heart disease, strokes and diabetes among many other diseases and threats against good health and regulates high blood pressure. It burns about 250 calories per hour, which makes it an easy way to lose weight. There are thousands of studies and articles on walking to improve your life. Recently, I hiked to the top of Mount Royal. It took about two hours roundtrip, but it was an incredibly rewarding experience. The views from the top of the mountain are breathtaking, the trails are fun to follow and on a nice day, there is truly nothing better than to be outside. There are several ways to get to the top of this mountain, so you won’t get bored or intimidated by the hundreds of stairs that lead to Mount Royal Park. The routes range from easy to very difficult.  You can stick to the main road or follow trails through the woods. There is a beautiful chalet overlooking the city with a snack bar and a souvenir shop once you reach the summit. There are also several areas with binoculars that you can pay to view the city. There are so many different angles to view the city during this hike, and it is even possible to hike to the other side of the city and view St. Joseph’s Oratory from Beaver Lake.

Wow, I'm inspired. I recently lost my Opus card so I've been walking to school, and it really does make my day better.

I was wondering if there is a website that shows the routes up Mont Royal. I've always wanted to take advantage of it, since I think it's probably the best green space in our city. However, I find it intimidating. I literally don't know where to start!

Personally, I hate walking being a bike person and also because I do most of my walking in the city, where it's always crowed. If I'm going to walk then I want to take a hike in the forest somewhere...although in way you can get that in Montreal. A few years back, my gym class in Cegep took a hike on Mount Royal and it was really fun but I haven't gone back since. When I do go out for a walk now I drive up to Summit park which is near Mount Royal. It's got less people and free parking, which for me is key since I hate to have to pay to enjoy nature.
